“Congress needs to find “the will to solve the problem” of veterans benefits for those who were sickened from toxic fire pit exposure while serving in combat zones, a trio of veterans and advocates write in a Memorial Day weekend appeal on NBC News.
“The VA, however, hasn’t acknowledged a definite connection between the burn pits and their ailments, limiting service members’ ability to get adequate treatment,” former Central Commander Gen. David Petraeus, former Veterans Affairs Secretary Dr. David J. Shulkin, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) CEO Jeremy Butler wrote in the call to action. “This has been a long-smoldering issue for the veteran community, as until now Congress has lacked the will to solve the problem.”” Newsmax
Comment: David Petraeus, one of the more successful bootlickers in American history in US military history, must have heard China Joe claim yesterday that his sainted son, the warrior lawyer, was infected with brain cancer in Iraq when his air conditioned house trailer was positioned down wind from the trash pit in which the daily garbage was burned in the compound where he lived and sucked up to the present SECDEF
Ah, Petreus has heard the call. pl

Oh well now, Glioblastoma has gotten a bunch of people, including Ted Kennedy and I believe Lee Atwater as well. It seems a bit of a stretch to nail down the cause as being downwind of a burn pit. One could examine his life in detail and probably find at least a dozen other possible causes, or maybe it had no external cause at all; many cancers are idiopathic. Another case of stolen valor I’m afraid. Maybe my Father’s Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia that killed him at 86 in 2005 was caused by smoke and dust from the Sloane Court Bombing in London back in 1944.
Ah, now you mention Petraeus, Colonel Lang, just yesterday I was reading this very interesting report, based on research by The Guardian, wondering whether you could have met this man, Steele, since they say he was in Panama too, prachuting or wherever…

Now, they say, he is making biomass with a corporation in Liberia…of all places..I wonder what kind of biomass is that…
As Major Kendall remarked to Colonel Marlowe in the “Horse Soldiers”, “where do like your latrines, colonel, upstream or downstream?” Apparently, like the army of good ole Yankee Col. Secord, the JAG corps didn’t know why that would be important. You would think lawyers would pay more attention to how the wind is blowing.
Admiral Zumwalt once visited our lab to hold a news conference during his campaign to get agent orange benefits for Vietnam veterans. Oh, the contrast!!
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
