“Putin should be worried about Ukraine capturing one of Russia’s new T-90M tanks”

T 90 M

“The T-90M Proryv is the latest modernization variant of the MBT that first entered into service with the Russian Army in 1994. The upgraded T-90 tank has been vastly improved in terms of protection, mobility, and firepower.

The Proryv variant is armed with a 125mm 2A46M-4 smoothbore gun that is capable of firing standard ammunition as well as anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) Refleks NATO Code AT-11 Sniper-B rounds. Secondary armament includes a remotely operated weapon station armed with an NSVT 12.7mm heavy machine gun and a 7.62mm PTKM coaxial machine gun.

The configuration of the Proryv is similar to the previous T-90 models, with a driver compartment at the front, a turret at the center of the hull, and a power plant located at the rear. It is propelled by a 1000mm 12-cylinder engine, allowing it to reach speeds of 60 kph on roads and 50 offroad.

The MBT is also equipped with the new Relikt ERA (Explosive Reactive Armor) armor fitted at the front and on each side of the turret.

The T-90M was first tested during the Zapad-2017 military exercise in September 2017.”

Comment: Yeah. If you lose control of the battlefield,, then there are consequences. “C’mon man, you know the thing.”

I used to have an office that was devoted to bringing thingies like this back to CONUS for reverse engineering. My lads paid good money for “the bear’s spares.” pl

“After the war, the Iraqis laid on an exhibition of equipment captured in the final battles. It was at a cantonment just south of Baghdad. The US had overhead photography of the event, but DIA people also walked around through the exhibition with all the other foreign visitors. There were hundreds of tanks, over a thousand pieces of heavy artillery, armored personnel carriers in the thousands, anti-aircraft guns and trucks as far as the eye could see. Lang later briefed this show to President Mubarak of Egypt. He asked what he was looking at in the pictures. Lang told him that it was the skeleton of a dead army” – Tattoo

The Kyiv Independent just put out a good article on captured Russian equipment, including the T-90M. This one line struck me.

“Indeed, T-90s were essentially designed as up-gunned T-72s with more technology added. The T-90M is one of the most recent versions. According to the annual reference guide Military Balance 2021, Russians had just 10 T-90Ms in operation. ”

Ten T-90Ms (or less now) are not going to turn the tide for Putin’s boyos, no matter how good they are. It will be interesting to see if the advertised hype of the T-90M match up with what the real tank’s attributes. Seems a lot of Russian explosive reactive armor was replaced with pieces of rubber. The real armor was lost to pervasive Russian corruption.

    Forgot the link.

The Ukrainians already have at least one per wiki: “The open-source intelligence site, Oryx has visually confirmed the loss of . . . 3 T-90M: 1 destroyed, 1 abandoned, 1 captured).” Plus isn’t India producing the T-90M under license? But perhaps the Indian version does not have all the bells and whistles.

With the Rasputitsa coming those T-90s will have a much tougher time than the upgraded Ukrainian T-64BV model 2017. The Soviets used to build tanks with a low psi ground pressure, but many of the later models like the T-90 are heavy and have a higher ground pressure. At least one twitter account is claiming the sweeping advance in Kherson Oblast is accompanied by T-64 units.

In addition to the captured one that TTG mentioned, at least one was destroyed: https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/russia-just-lots-its-most-advanced-operational-tank-in-ukraine

The UralVagonZavod design bureau priorities seem to be more slanted toward Russia’s annual Tank Biathlon rather than battlefield survivability.
