What Do January 6th Patriots and Guantanamo Inmates Share?

Lack of due process and Habeus Corpus. That is it in a nutshell. I am certain that many readers of this piece supported the Bush Administration policy of snatching people who were assumed to have terrorist ties and locking them up in Guantanamo. The American people were justifiably furious in the aftermath of the terrorist strikes on 9-11 and wanted justice. We trusted that the American government was going to find the terrorists and bring them to justice.

Now, twenty years later, we know that our Government lied to us. The majority of the men locked up in Guantanamo are not terrorists and certainly were not directly involved in the attacks planned and ordered by Osama Bin Laden. You can see one of those stories for yourself in the movie, The Mauritanian.

The character played by Benedict Cumberbatch, Lt. Colonel Stuart Couch is a true hero.

Meanwhile, those who burned down buildings across the entire nation, including fire bombing federally owned buildings with federal employees inside, are not even being sought.

I participated in the defense of a number of prisoners at Gitmo whom I was persuaded were falsely accused by interested parties. I am glad that I did that.

      Col. Lang,

I have read numerous stories of alleged “high value” targets being nothing but an adversary with the ear of the US forces targeting their rivals in tribal disputes. Many aspects of the “War on Terror” led by the Republicans and hyped by Fox including waterboarding to elicit confessions were of course justified on the basis of “safety”. When the hysteria was on even the Democrats and of course large segments of the American people were all for it. Now it is a different justification and led by the Democrats but the results are the same – Evisceration of the “inalienable” rights including due process. They died long ago in our republic in name only. Yet the vast majority of the American people continue to play the partisan and identity game of the other team is bad and my team is good while they continue to be screwed over. For generations we are not the people our fathers were as you have said.
