Washington, April 30 – U.S. President Donald Trump has selected Dr. Nicole Saphier, a radiologist and Fox News contributor, as his nominee for U.S. Surgeon General. This marks Trump’s third attempt to fill the position after he withdrew the nomination of Casey Means.
The announcement of Saphier’s nomination comes amidst a clash between Trump and Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who is accused by Trump of obstructing Means’ nomination. Trump labeled Cassidy as “a very disloyal person” in a recent statement.
Means, who was closely aligned with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was unable to secure the necessary votes to advance through the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, which Cassidy chairs. Critically, Means is not a practicing physician and is known for her association with the Make America Healthy Again movement, which has made controversial statements regarding vaccines. Her brother, Calley Means, is employed at the White House.
Neither Cassidy’s office nor Means responded to requests for comment on these developments.
