Vice President JD Vance has installed a handcrafted chicken coop at the Naval Observatory, the official vice presidential residence, marking a unique addition to the historic property. The new coop was designed to complement the residence’s architecture and was constructed at no cost to taxpayers.
Crafted by Carolina Coops
The coop was built by Carolina Coops, a U.S.-based, family-operated business that has been producing premium chicken coops for 18 years. Founded in 2008 by Matt and Gnon DuBoise, the company started from a personal pursuit of fresh eggs and has since grown into a nationally recognized name for high-quality craftsmanship and animal care.
“Seeing our work become part of a historic residence like the Naval Observatory is a milestone I will never forget,” Matt DuBoise told Fox News Digital. “This project reflects the dedication of our entire team and the values that have guided us from the beginning.”
Personal Care and Family Involvement
According to Vance’s office, the vice president will personally tend to the chickens, and his children have already named the new chicks. The addition aligns with Vance’s previous lighthearted remarks about the number of eggs his children consume for breakfast.
The coop features walk-in, fully predator-proof design and a deep litter system that allows owners to go a year without cleaning, ensuring both convenience and animal welfare.
Educational and Cultural Significance
The coop was introduced at the annual Camp VPR event, hosted for local 4-H students in partnership with the USDA. The project reflects broader interest in sustainable living and backyard agriculture in the United States, which has grown substantially in recent years. A 2025 study from the American Pet Products Association found that roughly 11 million U.S. households now keep backyard chickens.
“This is more than just a chicken coop—it’s an opportunity to teach kids valuable life lessons and share the joy of raising animals,” DuBoise said.
