Cuba, located less than 90 miles from Florida, is reportedly home to over 300 attack drones, escalating concerns about U.S. security. Florida’s over 20 military bases, particularly in Tampa, are now potentially vulnerable to drone strikes.
A former U.S. military officer highlighted that Middle Eastern allies are better shielded from Iran’s Shahed drones than Florida, underscoring the proximity risk.
Pentagon Expands Drone and Autonomous Warfare Budget
The Pentagon has increased funding for drone programs dramatically, from $225 million to $55 billion for the 2027 fiscal year. This reflects growing challenges as low-cost drones have proven capable of overwhelming advanced U.S. defenses in conflicts from the Middle East to Ukraine.
Plans now include developing “carrier drones” capable of launching smaller attack drones mid-flight, extending their range and tactical impact.
Florida installations, including CENTCOM and SOCOM, are at the forefront of potential threats. If adversaries deploy carrier drones with long-range missiles from Cuba, Mexico, or Central America, domestic military assets could be directly at risk.
The Pentagon’s modernization plans include advanced unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) capable of carrying JASSM-class missiles, providing a credible deterrent against long-range drone threats.
China and Russia’s Drone Advancements
Both China and Russia are enhancing autonomous drone technologies, including carrier drones capable of striking distant targets. China’s presence in Central and South America, including Cuba, further elevates the urgency for U.S. countermeasures.
The ongoing Ukraine-Russia drone conflict demonstrates how inexpensive, high-volume drone strategies can challenge conventional militaries. The U.S. aims to apply these lessons to protect its personnel and strategic assets.
With the rapid evolution of drone warfare, U.S. forces must achieve supremacy in drone defense. Effective counter-drone systems and modernized UAS fleets are essential to defend Air Force crews, naval assets, and domestic bases.
