Listened to the launch today on the radio. This time it was on SiriusXM in the new (2006) car. The last time I listened to a launch was on a warm July night in 1969. I and two friends were going camping, Moon landing or not. Normally we went without radios, without watches, without anything more technologically advanced than my Svea 123 white gas stove. At my parents’ insistence, we took a small transistor radio to listen to the landing. We laid on a thick bed of needles under the pines with a clear view of the waxing half-moon as we listen to Walter Cronkite narrate the historic event. To this day, I’m glad we experienced the event in that manner.

This morning’s launch included a female cosmonaut among the crew. The last Russian launch had one of our astronauts aboard. I’m glad this is still happening. We did so during the coldest days of the Cold War. There’s no reason we can’t continue to do so now.
