Is the unceasing ballyhoo over conflict with China going to continue? This article indicates that a war of any duration over there is logistically unrealistic for the US.

One of the too-many deaths of 2023 was Shane McGowan of the Pogues. Interesting, somewhat troubled character, but aren’t we all? The tributes have mostly concentrated on playing Dirty Old Town and Lullaby of NY, both classics.
Me, I like Angry Shane.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you “Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham 6” from If I Should Fall From Grace With God.
I sure hope he met Kissinger waiting for their respective elevators, and kicked him hard in the nuts.

At best, closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. More likely, talking tough to fend off the electoral response to “Wir schaffen das”.
What we’re now seeing is a determined attempt by the EU central powers to offload their refugees onto the peripheral EU countries. A start already being made with Poland.
Either what you say or they think Donaldo Trumpsteroso will be elected and they are appealing to his equivalent strategy of barn door closing after it’s game set and match over. They left out one thing though – “.. and Mexico will pay for it (the wall)!”
Just tell me one thing, F&L. Will the very stable genius clean out the Augean stables next time round. Or is the Last Chance Saloon closed for business.

Which department of our gigantic war and untruth apparatus is manufacturing ridiculous drivel like this which tries to make the unwashed proles believe that China and Russia are making videos which make outrageous claims? Is it the Lindsey Graham Department of Valor or something else?

NYT: Woo-Hoo! Gun Homicides Are Up Only 51% Since Ferguson!
Ok maybe not the actual NYT headline, just the buried lead.

Fred,
Mass shootings are way up, not gun homicides.
Don’t celebrate – the deficit was more than compensated for by way of the pandemic and vax. Guns went on vacation.
Are there Stand Your Ground statistics too? Fred? Down South in the Sunshine State?

“South Africa has filed a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing it of crimes of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza after nearly three months of relentless Israeli bombardment has killed more than 21,500 people and caused widespread destruction in the besieged enclave.”
A friendly new year’s greeting to Blighty from the guys on Russian Telegram, the many dead sailors at Feodosia and a few dead children and amputees in Belgorod its hospitals. Liz Truss seemed confused about who owned Veronezh and Kursk Oblasts. Makes one miss the days when only in America was total ignorance of everything a requirement for getting ahead. No worry, we’re still number 1 in the ignorant neanderthal department, but not by much it looks like.
Maybe our English Outsider can spring for a map for Number 10 Downing Street. (Soon to be renamed Down’s Syndrome Street?) We can take up a collection for postage here. Make sure to explain how the distance between Moscow to London is much less than to Washington. (And remember that Joe Biden is a very old Irishman).

Pancras-France-cancelled-Southeastern-Trains-hold-tunnel-flooding-Thameslink-services-axed-staff-shortages.html
Britain ends 2023 with another transport collapse . The whole year passed under the shadow of the energy crisis, endless strikes – and tens of thousands of canceled flights due to infrastructure overload. And at the end of the year, the tunnel across the English Channel was also temporarily closed .
The 50-kilometer tunnel, built in 1994, allows you to travel from London to Paris in two hours. This is a good alternative to low-cost airlines, which constantly experience flight delays and cancellations. But now the tunnel has suddenly flooded – leaving 30 thousand passengers to fend for themselves .
Infrastructural problems have been accumulating for decades – since the Thatcher era, when they began to save on it. In many ways, it also remains simply very backward – only 8 out of 52 major cities in Britain have a metro or tram. Only 38% of English trains are electrified .
At the same time , the government pumped tens of billions of pounds into megaprojects – like a high-speed railway from London to Manchester . They promised to complete it first by 2015, then by 2020. The cost of the project jumped to 50 billion pounds – after which it was simply cancelled .
At the same time , the deterioration of infrastructure – be it railways or highways – is colossal . The situation is similar in the USA – where the infrastructure has not been modernized for decades . So there will be more and more man-made disasters – on infrastructure with a 30-50-year life cycle . Well, in the future, London will probably desperately blame the “Russian saboteurs” for everything – taking revenge for the supply of missiles to Kyiv for attacks on Crimea or Belgorod.

Nesmiyan’s summary of what’s immediately ahead in Ukraine. Written before the serious set of exchanges yesterday and today which involved a significant number of deaths and casualties of Russian civilians in Belgorod, designed to make a truce, which Nesmiyan sees as inevitable, unlikely soon, but it might. Zelensky has proved himself to be at most a politician and not a statesman, but then he’s not really in charge of anything anyway. FWIW, I personally don’t think Nesmiyan quite understands the range of options or better, time evolution scenarios of the Schoedinger equation here.
I’ll include this link to today’s interview with Wilkerson. The N weapon stuff is mostly for clicks but it refers to Wilkerson’s worry that the US will use one, not Russia. He condemns Netanyahu as the 21st Century Hitler in the making, which I agree with 100%.
Real Danger: Nuclear Weapons Use.

The Ultimate Goal (Anatoly Nesmiyan)
http://tinyurl.com/22n3tvpe
The campaign to stigmatize Russia, which has already acquired a quite stable state in the West, has a number of side effects that are inherent in any sustainable system.
The first effect is that stable feedback mechanisms have been created. Any attempt to doubt the created image of evil either fails or very quickly and very easily creates a situation that can be interpreted unambiguously and stigmatizes the already doubtful image. (See link for continuation)
F&L,
“The second effect is that in the mass consciousness “Russia” and “Putin’s Regime” are identical values”
That observation by Nesmiyan is certainly accurate, but that’s a common occurrence in almost any war on both sides. In this case, I think Putin is responsible for the stigmatization of Russia with his launching and continuation of the blatant invasion of Ukraine. He’s also directly responsible for the revitalization and substantial expansion of NATO. He and Russia had a lot more support among the Ukrainian population before February 2022. Reconciliation in now out of reach for at least a generation or two.
Nesmiyan’s article has many other good points. He talks of a “peace party” in the West, but I don’t see a “peace party” in Russia. Unless such parties exist in both camps, there is no talk of peace, just capitulation and a full return to the worst of the Cold War. I am pleasantly surprised that Nesmiyan touches on Russia’s economic consequences of this war. I don’t agree that the West, except for a fanatical few, want the dismantling of
Russia. Our hesitance in supplying weaponry to Ukraine is proof of that. In fact, I think the West as a whole is fearful of a complete collapse of Putin’s regime and the unknown unknown that may be unleashed. A the same time, we’re fearful of what a victorious Kremlin will do next.
Happy New Year Everyone! =)
