Vancouver, BC. Capital of anti-Asian hate

“Last year, more anti-Asian hate crimes were reported to police in Vancouver, a city of 700,000 people, than in the top 10 most populous U.S. cities combined. With almost 1 out of every 2 residents of Asian descent in British Columbia experiencing a hate incident in the past year, the region is confronting an undercurrent of racism that runs as long and deep as the historical links stretching across the Pacific. ” Bloomberg

Comment: I confess to a frisson of schadenfreude at the thought of all those prissy Anglo-Canadians in Vancouver, BC who love to look down on Americans while at the same time having THE WORST record on ant-Asian violence and bigotry in ALL of North America. pl

Vancouver has carried the brunt of Hong Kong relocations now twice – first when Hong Kong money fled in the 1990’s before reverting back to China. That raised housing prices out of the reach of most locals. Resentments grew ,along with the size and takeover of the city by new Hong Kong residents.

Victoria BC is also suffering from inflated housing prices that resulted in a large inventory of vacant “safe houses”, owned by foreigners for safe harbors but not actually lived in. Creating a hollow shell of a city. Nothing excuses hate crimes, but we do need to measure their tensions through their eyes, as a former commonwealth country with various chickens coming home to roost.

However, in total agreement with our own well-earned resentment against their holier than thou condemnation of our history of US social problems. Canada has still not gotten a handle on “covid” after months of preening their plan was to keep those filthy, diseased Americas away from their pristine borders and they would be safe – which in fact was their fear and loathing of anything Donald J. Trump. Irony being it was Biden sho shut down their oil sands pipeline, not Trump who gave it a green light.

Where was their vaunted socialized “health” system?

      • James says:

Our much vaunted socialized health system worked pretty darn well earlier on. The US, to its credit, through a lot of money and political capital at developing vaccines and reaped the rewards. We have been doing on-par with Europe – which is not terrible.

Hey, if the Vancouver chapter of the PLA alumni association is fine with all the “anti-Asian” hate, who are we to complain about it. For all we know, they might be the ones doing it, or the victims.

    All
Anglo-Canadians have had centuries of practice in inter-communal abuse. My French-Canadian ancestors can testify to that.

      Lang?
      Sounds more like Danish-Canadian.

My mother’s family are French-Canadian. “Lang” is Scots in origin. I am French, English, Scots, Irish and German in ancestry. the Germans came over from Westphalia in 1848. They were the last to arrive from Europe. They were immigrants sponsored and recruited by the Wisconsin territorial government.

The people that are most antagonistic towards the new Hong Kongers are the long standing Asian Canadian population.

I lived in Vancouver for 35 years. 4 years ago my wife and I moved to Ontario so we could purchase a house that was affordable. Unfortunately the market in Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby and surrounding area have insanely out paced the Canadian average for houses. In effect the lower mainland has suffered from a blue collar genocide. On going joke about Vancouver it’s a city of millionaires servicing billionaires. Average mortgages are for 1.8 million.
